Class 13 2024 - 2025

Mr Neil Gregson

Mr Neil Gregson

Welcome to Class 13
We are a mixed Key Stage 4 and 5 class of seven pupils – Our teacher is Neil and our class is supported by Carla, Sam, Jan and Sarah
Class 13 follows the Pathway 3b curriculum and follows pathways for external accreditation through ASDAN Supporting Aspirations and ASDAN Transforming Aspirations as well as completing AQA unit awards.
In English, we have a focus on functional communication and understanding of functional language, we use strategies such as PECS, Colourful Semantics, Sensory Stories and Attention Autism to support us to engage with and communicate about the lesson content.
In Maths, we focus on developing our functional mathematical skills and develop problem solving and thinking skills. We do this through practical activities and a variety of ways to generalise our skills and consolidate our understanding. We use strategies such as PECS, Attention autism, use ICT such as the interactive whiteboard and iPads and practical lesson resources to support us to engage and learn in a meaningful way.
Through our Pathways and ASDAN Accreditation we follow a theme in which we can engage with and have different learning experiences across a range of different subjects.
Our ASDAN Supporting Aspirations follows four pathways – Friends, relationships and community, Good Health, Independent Living and Employability.
This year we are focusing on modules within these pathways;
Autumn – Understanding My Behaviour
Spring – My Technology
Summer – My Community
For our Physical and Sensory Development, we take part in Weekly PE lessons and regular sensory input which is personalised for the individuals in class and which supports us to with our sensory needs and enable to practice self/co-regulating strategies to manage our feelings and help us to prepare to be ready to learn.
We are developing our independence and self-help skills throughout the school day and follow individualised pathways in developing these skills which can include organising our own belongings, independence through reduced support in our work, doing jobs around the college, accessing the community, cooking, eating/drinking, getting dressed etc.

Autumn Term
Autumn I – With our main focus being ‘Understanding my behaviour’ we are learning about emotions and feelings through Zones of Regulation. We are practicing ways in which we can support ourselves to self-regulate and also developing our communication, interaction and relationships within class through structured communication sessions, dance massage and music and movement sessions as well as intensive interaction.
In English we are developing our communication and understanding of language following the key vocabulary for colour, zones of regulation and key words within our sensory story ‘Colours, Colours’. Through our sensory story we will communicate our preferences through making requests and also make comments throughout the lesson. In Maths we have a focus on shape and colour and are working towards developing functional communication through making expressive comments and following instructions as well as making requests for shapes and colours for artwork, cooking or developing fine motor skills within sensory sessions.
In PE we are taking part in Boccia and following an AQA Unit award, we also access physical activities through daily exercise, regular walks round the school grounds and at break times and through sensory breaks. In RE we are learning about Buddhist worship and festivals, completing an AQA Unit award within this, along with daily Collective Worship and weekly assemblies.
